Frequently Asked Questions
When was my M59/66 rifle made?
I have posted a chart of the serial number range for each year along with the letter prefix in the send chart from the bottom of the Survey Results page. You can use the serial number or letter prefix to determine the year of manufacture of your rifle from this chart.
When was my M59 rifle made?
I used log book data from many M59/66 rifles to determine the year of manufacture for the M59/66 rifles. I have had no reports of a M59 rifle being sold with a log book. In theory M59 rifle were made from about 1960 to 1966. If each prefix was used for only one year, I should have data on 5 or 6 different prefixes for M59 rifles. At this time I only have had two different prefixes reported. Until I receive reports of other letter prefixes or log book data for the M59 rifles I do not have enough information to determine year of manufacture.
Where is the letter prefix to the serial number located
on my rifle?
The letter prefix is ONLY found before the serial number on the left side of the receiver.
Where can I buy accessories to modify my rifle?
Which aftermarket parts are good, and which are junk?
I am a collector and would recommend that you leave your rifle as is. If you are determined to modify you rifle, a good source of information is Survivors SKS Boards. Registration is free. You can post questions or search the archives to find more information about accessories and vendors.
What parts can I legally replace on my rifle?
Is it legal to modify my rifle?
Yugoslavian SKS rifles were imported with Curio and Relic status. Replacing parts with identical parts is legal. If you replace parts with different parts it is easy to make an illegal rifle. The best legal analysis I have found is “Survivors” SKS FAQ
How do I disassemble or clean my rifle?
The best set of instructions I have found to disassemble and reassemble the Yugo SKS is found at Surplusrifle.com
